Olga Kozieł is a student of ethnomusicology at the Warsaw University, and a member of a handful of singing collectives.
Interested in traditional music since 2005, when she first heard a group of traditional singers at a live performance. That experience was so strong that she had to discover more – she started going to villages, collecting songs, learning how to sing. As well as from traditional singers, Olga got her musical education by working with noted teachers of Polish traditional music – Jan Bernad, Monika Mamińska, Ewa Grochowska, and participated in workshops led by teachers from Russia, Ukraine, Lithuania, Belarus and Serbia, who themselves were introduced to the world of traditional music sounds by their masters – village musicians.
Olga is delighted with the palette of colors and shades of sounds, the voice capabilities of traditional singers, the diversity and unpredictability, offered by village music. Participation in workshops of improvised music helps in understanding complex art of musical improvisation as well as gaining improvisational skills, that she tries to use while singing. Fascinated not only by singing, but dancing as well – Olga spent countless hours on dancing floor spinning to mazurka rhythms.
